How to play, in four moves

  1. 1. Set the board

Twelve pits in two rows, four seeds in each. The row nearest you is yours.

  2. 2. Sow

Scoop every seed from one of your pits and drop them one by one, anticlockwise, into the pits that follow. Going all the way round? Skip the pit you started from.

  3. 3. Capture

If your last seed lands on your opponent's side and makes two or three, take them. Then check the pit before it: keep taking twos and threes along their row. Taking every seed on their side at once doesn't count.

  4. 4. Win

When your opponent's row is empty after your move, the game ends and the seeds left on your side are yours. Most seeds wins. Then you talk about it for a week.
